Woman Claims Starburst Candies Are Dangerously Chewy in Lawsuit

A woman claims Starburst candies are so chewy, they should come with a warning label.

The woman is suing Starburst's parent company, Mars Inc., for over $25,000 for "permanent personal injuries" she claims she sustained after biting into one of their candies in 2005.

"I'm not sure, maybe three chews and they literally locked my jaw... and it just literally pulled my jaw out of joint," she said.

Her lawyer says the candies caused her to develop temporal mandibular joint dysfunction. She now has trouble chewing, sleeping and talking since the incident.

The candy maker has yet to respond to the lawsuit and couldn't be reached for comment. No court dates have been set.

She offered to negotiate a settlement with Starburst's insurer that would cover her rehabilitation but the company declined. "I don't want to see anybody else have to go through what I have gone through from eating a piece of candy that was supposed to be soft chew," she said.
