Firefighter John Trainer, 38 of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, fell to his death last night (July 24, 2007) while re-organizing a fire hose on the top of a fire truck at the Mechanicsburg station. Last night, Mr. Trainer responded to a house fire which required the use of the truck's fire hose. When back at the station, Mr. Trainer climbed on the top of the fire truck in order to re-organize the hose previously used. While re-organizing, Mr. Trainer slipped and fell about 10 feet to the concrete floor below. Unfortunately, Mr. Trainer's injuries were fatal.

He was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Urbana, where he was pronounced dead late last night.

Trainer, a firefighter since December 2005, was working at the Honda plant in Marysville in its human resources department, Shonkwiler said.

"It's real difficult right now," the chief said, describing Trainer as an excellent firefighter.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
