Boy Suffers Fatal Head Injury at Church Camp

A 15-year-old boy died after suffering a fatal head injury in an accident at church camp, according to Montgomery County Coroner's Office.

The boy was taken off of life support at Childrens Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon, said officials. The accident happened at church camp located at Cedarville University which was held for 1300 children.

Authorities say the boy was wearing a sumo wrestling suit and was in a wrestling match, when he jumped and struck his head.

Faculty and students at Cedarville University were hoping for a miracle. They had been holding prayer vigils for the boy and his family members.

Ohio Supreme Court Allows Workplace Discrimination Case Against City to Proceed

Former Fire Chief Michael Dworning was granted approval to proceed with a workplace discrimination lawsuit against the city.

The Ohio Supreme Court's decision on Tuesday, upheld a previous ruling by the 8^th Ohio District Court of Appeals which agreed that Dworning's civil lawsuit could move forward without first going through the city's Civil Service Commission.

The city along with a Cuyahoga County Common Pleas judge had argued - that city employees such as Dworning were required to complete an administrative appeals process before taking civil action against the city involving employment issues.

Chris Frey, City Law Director, was unhappy with Tuesday's ruling. The city will attempt to settle the case out of court, he said.

Dworning sued the city and several others in 2004, alleging he was fired because of a disability, in violation of the city's anti-discrimination provisions.

But city officials dispute Dworning's claim that he was fired. Frey said Dworning retired and has collected in excess of $60,000 of retirement benefits that he would not have gotten had he been fired.

Thai Basil Recalled for Possible Salmonella Contamination

Lucky Green Trading Inc. announced a recall of its Thai Basil due to potential Salmonella contamination.

The recall was announced following a random inspection by the FDA that found the products contained Salmonella. The distribution and importation of the products have been suspended while the FDA and the company continue their investigation.

The Basil was distributed in Arizona, Southern California and Nevada on June 30, 2008 to retail stores and direct delivery to customers.

The product was shipped in 14 LB cardboard cartons with 12 individual packages weighting approx.1.2 LB each in clear, unmarked, plastic bags. The exterior cartons were labeled "16 DE SEPTIEMBRE S/N SANTA ROSA TAPACHULA NAYARIT, C.P. 63731" "Thai Basil" and also had an attached sticker with Airway Bill #027 1947 0861.

To date the company has not received reports of illness.

Salmonella symptoms include fever diarrhea (often bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In elderly people, young children and those with otherwise weakened immune systems, illness can often times lead to fatal infections.

Consumers who purchased Basil at a retail location should contact the store they purchased it from to determine if their basil is included in the recall. Consumers can contact the company directly with questions at (714) 554-9293.

Dayton Man Strikes Light Pole; Killed in Accident

A Dayton man lost his life in a car accident today when the vehicle he was driving went left of the center line and struck a Dayton power and light pole.

The accident occurred on Gettysburg Avenue between Cornell and James H. McGee in Dayton, just after 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, according to police.

The man, 37, of Dayton, was driving his older model maroon vehicle with his 13-year-old son when he began veering to the left side of the road and then struck the pole so hard it fell into the street, police said.

He was transported to the hospital, but pronounced dead an hour after arrival due to the serious injuries he suffered in the crash, police said.

Ohio Woman Files Wrongful Death Suit Against Mylan Pharmaceuticals

An Ohio woman has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against, on behalf of her husband, who allegedly died from an allergic reaction to a product made by the West Virginia Company.

The lawsuit was filed on May 9, in Kanawha Circuit Court against Mylan Pharmaceuticals and Mylan Inc.

According to court documents, her husband was prescribed Phenytoin, a drug that is used to help control seizures. Less than a month after starting the initial dosage, he started to have skin disruptions on his body and his eyelid peeled off.

He was taken to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton where he was diagnosed with toxic epidermal necrolysis.

On May 27, 2006, he died as a result of his ingestion of the drug. The suit seeks punitive and compensatory damages to cover her husband's injuries and pain and suffering, as well as damages to his estate.

According to the suit, Mylan has "reaped huge profits while concealing from the public knowledge of the potential hazard associated with the ingestion" of Phenytoin.

Amy Clanton claims her husband would not have taken Phenytoin if he had known of the risks and dangers associated with the drug.

Animal Tracking Explorer Kit Recalled by MindWare

MindWare, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, announced a voluntary recall of its Animal Tracking Explorer Kit. The powder included in the kit marked "Plaster of Paris" is calcium hydroxide, which can pose a risk of eye and skin irritation to children who handle the product.

The recalled product includes a bag of white powder, nature study tools and equipment (field lens, labels, specimen jars, paper clips, notebooks etc.) and an Explorer Guide.

The company has not received any reports of injuries to date, but they advise consumers to dispose of the material marked "Plaster of Paris" to avoid injury.

Consumers are advised to stop using the recalled products immediately and to contact MindWare for a refund or a free replacement product. More information can be found on MindWare's website.

Rawlings Junior Batting Helmets Recalled for Lead Paint Hazard

Rawlings Junior Batting Helmets announced a voluntary recall, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), because the surface paint on the helmets contains excessive levels of lead, a violation of federal lead paint standards.

The recall includes about 2,300 junior batting helmets with model number CFHLJR. The helmets are yellow and orange with black accents. The model number can be located on the back of the helmet.

Consumers are advised to stop using the recalled products and to contact the retailer of purchase or Rawlings directly for a free replacement. The helmets were sold nationwide from July through November 2007 at sporting goods retailers.

Lewisburg Woman Killed in Crash on Ohio 503

A Lewisburg woman, 46, was killed in a car accident on Ohio 503 near the Preble County-Darke County line. She was pronounced dead at the scene from the serious injuries she sustained in the crash.

A passing motorist discovered the woman's 1997 Chevrolet Venture van on the north side of Ohio 503, just after 3:30 a.m.. Police believe the vehicle struck a ditch and rolled over several times before coming to rest after striking a tree.

Preble County Sheriff's deputies are investigating the cause of the accident, at this time they are unsure what caused the van to leave the roadway.

The victim was taken to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office, in Dayton, where an autopsy will be performed. Before investigators can make a final determination on the cause of the crash, they need the results of the toxicology report.

Ohio 503 was closed for three hours while officials conducted their investigation.

Little Bay Baking Company Issues Nationwide Allergy Alert

Little Bay Baking Company announced a voluntary recall of Corn Bread and Muffin Mix that was sold before May 2, 2008 because it contains undeclared soy. People who may have a severe sensitivity or allergy to soy are at risk of developing a serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products unknowingly.

The Corn Bread and Muffin Mix was distributed throughout the United States via internet orders and in retail stores. The products are available in 12.6 ounce white paper tin tie bag packages sole under the names Little Bay Baking and GFCF Diet.

To date, the company has not received any reports of illness.

The recall was prompted after it was discovered that the mixes containing possible traces of soy was distributed but the packaging failed to reveal any presence of soy. A preliminary investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company's ordering process.

Ohio Teen Suffers Head Injury in Dirt Bike Accident

An Ohio teenager is in critical condition Tuesday night, after troopers say he crashed into an oncoming vehicle with his dirt bike when he lost control on a curve.

The accident happened around 3 p.m. in village of Barton, just outside of Clairsville, Ohio.

The teen, 19, is listed in critical condition after suffering major injuries including severe head trauma, according to troopers. At this time troopers are unsure if the teen was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Troopers say he went left of the center on the dirt bike and struck a car driven by a man, 72. The driver of the car did not suffer any injuries. The teen was transported to Wheeling Medical Park for medical attention.

The accident is still being investigated by troopers, there is no further information.
