The FDA announced that twenty-one people, in thirteen states, have been diagnosed with salmonellosis that appears to have been caused by the same strain of Salmonella that was found in the recently recalled cereals made by Malt-O-Meal.

The recalled items were nationally distributed under the Malt-O-Meal brand as well as other private label brands such as Acme, America’s Choice, Laura Lynn, Pathmark and others. The “Best If used by” dates on the recalled cereals are April 8, 2008 (AP0808) through March 18, 2009 (MAR1809).

Consumers are advised to discard any of the recalled products they may have in their home. Retailers and grocery stores are also advised to remove the cereals from their shelves.

Malt-O-Meal voluntarily originally recalled the cereals on April 5, 2008, because routine testing discovered Salmonella in products produced on March 24, 2008.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in small children or those with weakened immune systems. If you believe you may have ingested some of the recalled cereal or have experienced any symptoms associated with Salmonella poisoning, you should contact your doctor immediately.
