Giftco Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. product Safety Commission, announced a voluntary recall of its Harry Potter Bookends because the paint contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Lead exposure, especially in small children can lead to serious adverse health effects, including brain and kidney damage.

To date, the company has not received any reports of injury.

The recall includes poly-stone bookends painted and shaped in the characters of the Harry Potter book series including: Hedwig, Hermoine, Harry Potter and Crookshank.

Consumers are advised to take the bookends from small children immediately and to return them to Giftco for a full refund.

Starting February 10, 2009 all children’s toys and products must meet new, stricter lead standards no matter when the products were made, according to a newly released legal opinion by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
