A member of an Australian rock band and his wife died Thursday morning on the Ohio Turnpike after their vehicle crashed trying to avoid a deer.

Electric Jellyfish guitarist Hayden Rodney Sweeney, 23, and Bridget O'Brien, 26, from California died at the scene, said Lt. John Maxse, head of the State Highway Patrol's Milan post.

Three other band members were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland and were not seriously injured, he said. Music equipment, including an amplifier and at least one guitar, were scattered along the road.

The 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe was eastbound about 5:40 a.m. when it struck a guardrail. Maxse said the vehicle went across the highway and overturned off the left side of the roadway and struck a concrete barrier.

The group had been in the United States for less than a month and had upcoming shows in Boston, Atlanta and North Carolina.
